You Don’t Wait for Inspiration , You go after it with a club !

Sept 5, 2008

On July 14Th of this year I sent my son off to boot camp MCRD San Diego. It had to be one of  the most emotional days of my life, although I didn’t show it .But it was also the Proudest day  in my life.

After  many days went bye, I received my first letter from  my recruit,it brought tears to my eyes.He said ” Dad I made Guide my first week and fighting like hell to keep it” !He had done just what he had trained for the months before he left for boot camp . Did I mention I am really proud of him.

Thus set the wheels in motion. Another letter arrived and he explained how everything was going,it was really getting tough and I could hear the change in his voice like “what have I gotten myself into. After one more letter I could really here the change. He wrote and said he is learning the old saying Team isn’t spelled with an “I”.

That was a turning point in my life. While lying in bed I thought to myself there has got to be something more to life than all the hustle an bustle of everyday life.Just like the movie Ground hogs Day. Over and over and over.

After being Inspired by my son, I decide out of the blue to buy a touring bicycle and peddel to San Diego California to his graduation on October 10TH 2008. Did I mention I have not been cycling or training before this. Anyway ,I sold just about everything except for the cats the recliner and the business. While doing all that I realized that we humans collect alot of junk that we don’t use.

So here starts my journey to boot camp. Starting from Newport Oregon riding down Hwy 101 over the next 30 + days. Stopping to reflect on life and learning to cherish everyday as if it were our last.

Thank for taking the time to read my blog.

I would like to give a special thanks to Sgt.Grit at Grunt.com for the jersey and the flags.

Dave

Dave, Just saw your blog in Sgt Grit. My son graduated from MCRD Sept 7,07. I also got to see him receive his EGA on Family Day. It was very hard to fight back the tears of joy that I felt that day. You will be truely amazed on this day and it will change your life in a profound way! Welcome to THE Family of Parents of Marines. You are the Father of a UNITED STATES MARNIE ! God Bless you and your son

  14. glad you made it safely to san diego! i graduated in 1992 from MCRD one of the best experiences in my life, and made me what i am today. Make sure to tell him that a nation thanks him for his duty.

  15. Dave Believe me I know how proud you must be, Both of my sons are in the Marine Corps. Your son will not be the same young man that left for boot camp. Your son will have a new family in addition to yours and with time you will see that Marines take care of there own, and you are a Marine dad so you also now belong to the family. I remember the grinder in Dago very well and left a lot of blood sweat and tears there in the sand. Glad you had a safe journey and welcome aboard.

I am hoping that there might be some marine parents that might want to start getting together for road rides in the future .Great way to meet familys and possable fund raising for our guys in the Corp.

    Thanks Dave
